2021.12.02 13:39 mementovita Advice needed - SCRA related

I will be leaving for basic training in one month. Unfortunately, when I started the process I didn’t know the SCRA/“military clause” will only get me out of my lease and not my roommate.
My roommate is a good friend and I can’t screw him over by simply using the SCRA and leaving the rest of rent to him. It would cost me about $6400 to buy out of my lease, which I don’t really have.
Our options: 1. Buy out of lease - cost $6400 2. The apartment agreed to allow us to not face any fees if my roommate moves into a one bedroom or studio. However that’s not so appealing to my roommate since his rent will be a little more and he’ll have to sign another 12 or 13 month lease. 3. Find someone to take my part of the lease. Good option. No costs associated. But we haven’t been able to find someone.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

2021.12.02 13:39 teezeemee [S] [USA-TN] EXC Olympus OM-1 plus 50mm Zuiko 1.8
Olympus OM-1 : Excellent condition. - No haze or fungus on optics - The split prism is free from damage - The light meter functions well, and moves well in the viewfinder. - Seals replaced a couple years ago. - Very mechanically sound. - Body condition is amazing one good scratch on the base plate and very minor scuffs. - Lens comes with the body, no separate sell. That said the lens is in great shape and has a newer ND filter on it.
Recently got a M43 camera to use daily, so would consider trades against M43 mount primes. Also Willing to trade for a 35mm point and shoot that would be good for daily carry.
Price: 150$ OBO + 10$ shipping. Trades negotiable (see above).

2021.12.02 13:39 leebe_friik Interesting new technology from Halten. 15kg scooter that can go for 70 km and climb hills. Heavier scooter that can go for 100+ km and charge in 2.5 hours.

If you haven't heard of Halten, then I don't blame you. It's a Russian company that so far has mainly dealt in rebranding and variants of Chinese scooters. However, now there's an interesting video with an interview with their chief engineer about the new scooter platform they're developing. I'll try to translate as much as I understand; if I make a mistake, perhaps some better Russian speaker can correct me.
They set up to develop a custom motor for their scooters, which actually turned into an entire new, proprietary scooter platform. The gist of their approach is that instead of ubiquitous round 18650 or 21700 cells, they're developing their scooters to use rectangular, automotive NCM 811 (and another type) cells that look like large thin big chocolate bars. Rectangular cells provide more energy density by volume, and every cell (weighing near 1 kg) works like a big 18650 cell at 3.6V, except at a lot more amp-hours. Just 8 of these cells together, in 8s1p configuration, is enough to provide ~1800Wh for a medium/large scooter.
A problem with that approach is that 8s1p configuration provides just 30 volts of current, which isn't enough to drive a regular scooter motor. At the same time, as their approach was to build their own custom motor to begin with, so they built one that's optimized for such voltage while providing good torque. And as they were in control of both controller and the motor, they are able optimize it even further by adding even more advanced, better than sine-wave drive algorithms, helped by linear Hall sensors instead of discrete sensors. Instead of knowing just "it's now that the rotor is at 0 degrees" the controller would always know exactly how the rotor is positioned, and by intimately knowing the parameters of the custom motor, is able to calculate even more optimal drive timing. The power of their current, heavier motor is specified as 40 amps per phase, or 3 phases * 30V * 40 = 3600W by the way.
Coming back to the batteries, each chocolate bar sized cell actually comes with its own BMS that is even capable of temperature control and heating the cell in the cold (like Tesla does) and hard, physical circuit breakers in case something goes wrong. Surrounded by a metal casing, they are safe from electrical shorts and hazards, and the developer claims the only way someone could get that battery pack to burn and explode is to physically puncturing the casing and the cells somehow. But that's not all.
The scooter comes with integrated, smart charger, which means the scooter is plugged directly into 220-240V wall socket. Because the charger, the controller, and the battery pack can share information and each cell is relatively independent, it means it can safely charge the cells much faster. That 1800Wh battery with 100+ km of range is claimed to be chargeable in 2-2.5 hours, as the automotive batteries are indeed optimised for fast charging.
Instead of optimising just one component then, by having custom made advanced controller, battery and motor work together, they claim to be able to minimise overall efficiency of the power delivery system from ~85% of normal Chinese scooters to ~95%. In addition to having more power-dense automotive batteries, that efficiency is another factor in promising substantially bigger range and performance.
Currently they're working on the bigger scooter, and the lighter version, with thinner batteries will come later next year. The lighter scooter will have a geared motor, like rim motors on e-bikes, for more torque; we'll see how that works out as far as noise, but it could potentially indeed make it go up hills better.
While all this technology may not come cheap, then it is my understanding that these automotive cells are manufactured in very large quantities and therefore quite affordable (~$100/kWh) for a scooter. That's pretty exciting IMO.
On the other hand, given the system is proprietary and software controlled, they were touching a little bit on possible DRM and (if legally mandated) GPS geofencing options too. That's what always sucks about technology that's too smart for its own good.
